Kilpisjärvi: wind, mountains, ice, wind, and more wind

Kilpisjärvi is basically a road with some houses coming off it. But it’s nestled between Saana Fell on one side, and the lake Kilpisjärvi on the other so the views are amazing. The last time I was here it was covered in snow. This time around the terrain looked a lot more rugged and harsh, but still beautiful.

Something about Saana Feel always seems ominous to me. Especially when you look at it from the town, as it towers 1000 meters over you.

Ironically, since the weather was warmer here, it meant ice, lots of it. Which makes for fun walking, although neither of us have managed to break our coccyx yet.

It also meant this little guy stood out:

Unfortunately the weather wasn’t great while we were here, with the wind attempting to blow our house (cabin) down with 50-80 km/h gusts. But the big bad wolf eventually went somewhere else and we went chasing waterfalls (and wonderful views).

Kilpisjärvi is close to the point where Finland, Sweden, and Norway all meet. Climbing up to Salmivaara included ascents so steep they would’ve been tough without the snow and ice. But for our efforts in not slipping and dying, or breaking a leg and then dying from exposure, we were treated to breath taking (literally, the wind was so strong and cold it was breath taking) views of this area.

The shot below, is looking north towards Norway, over Kilpisjärvi.

This shot is looking west (hence the sunset) towards Sweden

And now we’re facing east looking towards Kipisjärvi town.

No hike would be complete without the obligatory selfies…

On our last night here, we decided to take a quick drive out of town and away from lights, and we found some different lights.
